There are many tendons in the foot and ankle. These tendons attach the muscle to various bones in your foot.  The function of the tendons allows you to walk and run, as well as, move your foot in different directions. These tendons are under a lot of strain when walk, but especially when running where they will have to support up to 2 to 3 times your body weight. They are can also be strained when there is abnormal biomechanic in the foot and ankle ( ie. Flat Feet and High Arch Feet). Because of this strain, they are susceptible to inflammation which is what we call Tendonitis,

Achilles Tendonitis

The Achilles tendon is located at the back of the calf and attaches to the back of the heel. Pain can occur anywhere along muscle and the tendon, but primarily occurs at the tendon at the back of the heel located above the heel. Pain is generally felt when walking and running at this location.

Posterior Tibial Tendonitis

The posterior tendon is located on the inside of the leg, ankle and foot and runs behind the inside ankle bone and attaches just above the inside arch. Pain generally occurs at the back and inside of the ankle and can run above the ankle. It can also occur at the attachment site above the arch. Pain can occur when pushing of your foot when walking or running.

Peroneal Tendonitis

The peroneal tendons are located at the behind the outside ankle bone and is attached to the a bony prominence on the outside of the middle of the foot and under the foot.  Pain can occur on the back and outside of the ankle. It can also occur at the attachment site on the outside of the foot. Pain can occur when pushing of your foot when walking or running.

Extensor Tendonitis

The extensor tendons are located on top of the foot and ankle and are attached to the toes. The tendon move the toes up. The pain can occur on the top of the foot and toes.  Pain can occur when  walking or running.

Anterior Tibial Tendonitis

The anterior tibial tendon is located on the top of the ankle and foot and inserts at the front inside of the foot. The tendon help move the foot up and inside.  The pain occurs when running or walking up and down stairs or incline and declines like hills.
